Yugo Reinvented: Building the Ultimate Modern Zastava M70 with JMAC Customs
Introduction: The Beast Needs a Makeover
The Zastava M70 is legendary in the AK community. Known for its bulged trunnion and 1.5mm-thick receiver, the "Yugo" pattern AK is built like a tank. It’s robust, reliable, and undeniably heavy-duty.

But "heavy-duty" often comes at the cost of modern ergonomics. The standard wood furniture is iconic, but it lacks M-LOK capability for lights and lasers. The fixed stock has a length of pull that many find awkward, and the recoil, while manageable, can still be tamed.
We decided to take this classic Balkan workhorse and drag it kicking and screaming into the 21st century. To do that, we turned to the masters of modern AK manufacturing: JMAC Customs.
The goal? A rifle that retains the M70's legendary durability but offers the handling, modularity, and flatness of a high-end modern sporting rifle. Here is the breakdown of the ultimate JMAC M70 build.
The Business End: Recoil Management and Real Estate
The first items to go were the slant brake and the wood handguards. We needed real estate for accessories and a way to keep the rifle flat during rapid fire.
The Muzzle: We installed the RRD-360HD-14F-KM. This isn't just a muzzle brake; it's a recoil erasure device. The "360HD" features radial porting to lower the muzzle and reduce felt recoil. Crucially, it is a KeyMount (KM) interface, meaning it’s ready to accept standard Dead Air silencers right out of the box.
The Rail System: To modernize the front end, we ditched the wood for aluminum. We used the HG-ZAK-10.64-L, a lower handguard specifically designed for the Yugo platform. It offers acres of M-LOK space and extends further down the barrel, allowing for a more modern, C-clamp grip.
Paired with the handguard is the GT-ZM70 Railed Gas Tube. This replaces the standard gas tube, giving you a rock-solid Picatinny rail on top for mounting optics scout-style or running IR devices, while also helping dissipate heat faster.
To ensure maximum control over the front of the rifle, we added the HRD-EXT-G Handstop. This skeletonized aluminum handstop features textured G10 scales for superior grip, helping pull the rifle into the shoulder.
The Ergonomic Overhaul: Folding Stock and Grip
The biggest challenge with Yugo-pattern rifles is the proprietary rear trunnion, which makes swapping stocks difficult. JMAC Customs has solved this completely.
The Rear Conversion: We utilized the RSA-YFS, a 1913 Picatinny rail adapter that bolts securely onto the fixed-stock Yugo rear trunnion. This single part opens up a world of modern stock options. Attached to that adapter is the FM-SM-1913 Folding Mechanism, a heavy-duty hinge that locks up tightly in both positions.
Finally, the stock itself: The TS-8RP. This is a modern take on the classic triangle folder. It’s lightweight aluminum, incredibly rigid, and features a rubber buttpad to keep it securely in your shoulder pocket. The entire setup transforms the transportability and shootability of the M70.
The Grip: The standard AK pistol grip is widely regarded as poor. We replaced it with the SPG-AK-G. This skeletonized aluminum grip matches the handstop with its own G10 panels. It provides a more vertical, modern grip angle that is infinitely more comfortable during long-range sessions.
Finishing Touches: Controls and Optics
To round out the build, we addressed the controls and sighting system.
**Racking an AK under stress can sometimes be fumbled due to the small charging handle. The CRIM-25 is an extended knurled knob that bolts onto the existing charging handle, providing a massive, positive surface for manipulation, even while wearing thick gloves.**
For the optic, we chose a rugged, proven option: The Holosun HS503CU. Its circle-dot reticle is fast for close-quarters work, and the solar backup ensures it’s always running.
Feeding the beast is an XTech Tactical MAG47, widely considered one of the most durable polymer AK magazines made in the USA, featuring reinforced steel lugs.
The Result
The difference between the stock M70 and the "JMAC'd" version is night and day.
The rifle balances better thanks to the extended handguard. The RRD-360HD brake dramatically reduces the felt recoil. The ergonomics—from the folding triangle stock to the G10 pistol grip—feel purpose-built for the modern shooter.
It’s still a heavy-duty Zastava at heart, but now it handles with the speed and precision of a top-tier tactical rifle.
